Lillian described a cellphone-pouch pilot at the middle school and said early data show fewer discipline referrals: “We've had 60% fewer discipline referrals so far this year compared to the same period last year,” she said, and noted the pouches were funded initially through a grant that cost about $27,000 for the middle school and would cost roughly $40,000–$50,000 to scale to the high school.
She cautioned the board about logistical differences for high-school students (open campus and driving) and said the district will develop policy and funding options before wider rollout.
On facilities and grants, Lillian said Mendocino College’s board approved an easement to allow bus‑charger installation and that the district secured a $200,000 grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture to expand farm‑to‑school work and cafeteria processing capacity. She also announced a community family wellness fair at Fort Bragg High School, Oct. 2, 4–7 p.m.
The superintendent concluded by asking the board to expect a public release of CAST score summaries in mid‑October and said staff would share a preview with trustees before that public release.
The board did not take formal action on the phone-pouch pilot during the meeting; trustees asked staff to return with funding and policy options if they choose to pursue scale-up.
