The board recognized Franklin‑McKinley students who participated in the districts annual Tech Challenge, a 38‑year program in which student teams build gravity‑powered devices that traverse obstacles. Advisers and students described iterative design, teamwork, and learning through failure as core lessons from the contests.
One adviser introduced several student speakers who described teamwork, making friends and learning engineering skills. A student said, "My favorite part of being in the tech challenge was working together as a team," and others praised teachers and advisors who supported the work.
Sherry Burch, director of educational resources, praised the longstanding partnership with the Tech Interactive and introduced Christina Lukluna, vice president of programs at the Tech Interactive, who said the organization intends to expand partnerships and participation. Superintendent Cruz and board members congratulated students and advisors and encouraged families to attend next years event.
District staff noted Franklin‑McKinley teams won three awards among more than 600 participants, and the district acknowledged advisers and community partners who make participation possible. The board presented certificates to honored students and urged continued investment in STEM pathways.
