Franklin‑McKinley reports more than 1,000 students in 2025 summer school; partners cite academic gains

The Franklin‑McKinley School District presented a summary of its 2025 summer programming, saying four sites (CCA, Los Arboles, McKinley and Ramblewood) served more than 1,000 students in a 20‑day program focused on STEAM and academic acceleration. Michelle Quillentang, the summer‑school coordinator and principal at Captain Jason Elementary, told the board the program partnered with local organizations such as CORAL, Silicon Valley Education Foundation (Elevate Math), Breakthrough Silicon Valley and the Computer Science Institute.
Quillentang highlighted assessment data and student engagement: “We average about 1,000 students in summer school daily” and she said the SVEF Elevate Math cohorts showed “an average improvement of 62% from pre‑assessment to post‑assessment” for grades 4–7. Presenters also described enrichment components — including arts partners and a college‑readiness cohort at Evergreen Valley College that increased participation from 44 to 55 students year‑over‑year — and confirmed transportation and ESY supports were provided for eligible students.
Board members asked for demographic and special‑education breakdowns; Quillentang said those figures could be provided later. Superintendent Cruz and board trustees praised the partnerships and noted capacity limits tied to staffing and certification requirements for classroom positions. The presentation closed with trustees encouraging continued outreach to families and exploration of ways to expand successful elements if budget and staffing allow.
