The Osage City Council on May 27 approved the purchase of two locating units for the Water and Gas departments to replace aging equipment. Dale Schwieger, Utilities Director, told the council the existing locators have been in service about 12 years and can locate cast iron lines but are not consistently dependable; the new units include GIS mapping capabilities and carry a three‑year warranty.
On a motion by Council Member Cathryn Houghton, seconded by Jeff Tice, council voted to buy the units from Subsurface at a cost not exceeding $27,000; the motion carried 8-0. Council members asked about the life expectancy of the new equipment and whether the current locators can find cast iron pipe; Schwieger said the old units can locate such pipe but are less reliable than desired, which drove the recommendation to replace them.
