Committee requires fiberglass/AZEK profile for gutters on historic Thatcher House at 36 Route 6A
Summary
Owners Thomas Gilligan and Joan Lynch received approval to replace badly rotten gutters on a circa-1830 Thatcher House at 36 Route 6A, with the committee amending the application to require fiberglass or AZEK (or wood if preferred) with a historic profile rather than exposed aluminum. The applicant agreed to amend and the committee approved the amendment.

Thomas Gilligan told the committee that the gutters on his recently purchased home (acquired May 15) had extensive wood rot and that his insurer required replacement by August 15. Committee members and neighbors described the home as an important Greek Revival / Thatcher House (circa 1830) and debated appropriate materials for preserving character.
One committee member said, "with the Greek revival house... the entire eave mechanism... including the gutters, I think, qualify as character defining features." The applicant agreed to amend his application to use fiberglass or AZEK with a matching historic profile (or wood if he preferred). The committee moved and approved application 26-A-090 as amended; members encouraged using materials that preserve the street-facing character and noted that fiberglass can closely mimic wood once painted.
