The Fresno County Board of Education opened a public hearing Feb. 27 to receive testimony on Kepler Neighborhood School’s renewal petition, which seeks county authorization for a five‑year term beginning July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2031.
Jeff Hunt, who introduced the item to the board, said the renewal petition was submitted Dec. 1, 2025, and is under review by the Fresno County superintendent’s charter review committee. "The renewal petition is for Kepler to continue operations as a county board authorized charter for a 5 year term beginning 07/01/2026 through 06/30/2031," he said. Kepler representatives described current enrollment (315 students) and cited subgroup gains, reduced suspension rates and a shift to restorative practices.
Supporters including John Dolan, who spoke on behalf of the Kepler board, urged approval and emphasized leadership stability and community ties. "This is an incredibly dynamic school that’s got a very bright future," Dolan told trustees. Kepler parents and students also testified, describing academic support, improved test scores and benefits from campus additions such as a planned play yard on Russell Street.
The hearing was limited to public testimony; the board paused for a short recess after the public comment period closed. The petition review committee will deliver a comprehensive report and recommendation to the board prior to the board’s consideration, as required by the county’s procedures.
