Council accepts Serengino resignation, posts application process for appointment

A majority of the Chantico City Council voted to accept Councilor Sandy Serengino’s resignation effective April 14, the council announced at its meeting.

A councilor moved, “I make the motion that we accept Sandy Serengino's resignation,” and after discussion the motion was called to a vote and recorded as passing. The chair directed that applications for the now-vacant appointed seat would be posted after the meeting so residents can apply and the council will later vote on an appointment.

Councilors debated whether the charter requires a written resignation. One member read Charter language on vacancy, noting the charter lists resignation as a reason for vacating a seat but does not specify a required form. Other councilors said precedent at a prior meeting—when a verbal resignation was recognized and a new member appointed—indicated the council has previously proceeded without a written letter. One councilor requested the process be researched before making future decisions.

The council did not identify a timetable for appointment beyond saying an application will be posted and the council would vote after applications are received. The council’s recorded action on the resignation was announced during the meeting and entered into the minutes.
