Council hears Elk Creek watershed sponsorship presentation; no decision

Clayton Scott of the USDA Conservation Service presented to the Town of Nutter Fort council by phone on Aug. 27 about potential local sponsorship of the Elk Creek Watershed project. He told councilors that “these projects require a local sponsor,” that planning and preliminary phases are 100% federally funded, and that if the project advances to implementation the cost-share would be a 75/25 split with the 25% local share borne by participating local sponsors. The watershed covers parts of Harrison, Barbour and Upshur counties and could provide flood-control and environmental benefits for Nutter Fort if implemented.
Councilors asked follow-up questions during the presentation. Mr. Scott advised that the town can withdraw from sponsorship at any time prior to committing funds and that the specific dollar amount the town might be asked to cover will be determined after the planning phase. No formal motion or vote was taken; councilors requested additional information before making a decision on sponsorship.
