Superintendent Cruz explained that Excite Foundation was one of the organizations awarded state funds to promote CalKIDS, a program that provides $500 accounts for children in California. Through an existing partnership, the district’s College in My Future initiative opens a college savings account for first graders; the Excite grant will support outreach to families and the district’s work to connect eligible children with their CalKIDS accounts.
Trustee Sanchez thanked Excite and noted that College in My Future helps families who were not aware they had accounts; he referenced CEO John Hogan’s earlier engagement with students. A motion to accept the grant (item 9.08) was made and seconded; the board approved the grant acceptance by voice vote.
The grant acceptance enables district staff and partners to continue outreach to families to ensure eligible children receive and can access the CalKIDS funds and related college-savings supports.
