Board approves Teach For America MOU to continue Ignite tutoring next school year

Dr. Trujillo presented the item, saying the district “had such great success with our Ignite tutoring program this past year at both [Kennedy] and at [another site], and we are excited to bring that back.” She told trustees the staff analysis showed “a huge improvement and increase in the data for the students that did participate,” and said the program model would serve about 20–22 students per school site if continued.
Trustee Rodriguez called the results “very impressive” and urged expansion; another trustee said even a single student’s improvement would justify the investment. The board noted the program was grant-funded and that continuation would not require general-fund dollars at this time. Trustee Chavez moved to approve the MOU; Trustee Cooper seconded the motion, which the board approved by voice vote.
The board's approval allows staff to finalize the MOU and continue Ignite at Kennedy and Santee (those site names were identified in the staff report). Dr. Trujillo said staff would return with implementation details if additional schools were added or if funding conditions changed.
The board took the action during its item 5.01 consideration and recorded the motion as passed. The move preserves the grant-funded tutoring partnership and the district’s plan to monitor and report student outcomes going forward.
