City to license Red Cross lifeguard curriculum for local training

The council voted to license American Red Cross lifeguard curriculum so the city can train and certify lifeguards in-house.
Mark explained the agreement provides materials and curriculum while city staff will deliver much of the instruction. "The Red Cross is kind of the gold standard for lifeguard training," Mark said. He added that city trainer Chris Babcock "has been doing lifeguard training for a number of years... She actually sits on our park board" and will likely facilitate a substantial portion of the courses.
Council members asked whether the city or an external representative would conduct the classes; staff said most instruction would be done by city personnel with Red Cross materials and that additional representatives might be brought in depending on timing and class size. The council approved Resolution F333 by voice vote.
Staff will execute the licensing agreement with the Red Cross and begin scheduling training to staff the pool and related facilities.
