The Cheney City Council approved Resolution F358 to provide a lodging-tax disbursement to support Eastern Washington University's graduation event returning to downtown Cheney. Staff said the request, as listed in the meeting packet, was for $15,500 to cover items including fireworks, road-closure costs (flagging/traffic control), marketing, a stage and performers, and some decor.
Mark, the council liaison or staff lead on the item, said the Cheney Members Association is coordinating the event and expects it to draw students and families into downtown. Council discussion focused on road-closure costs and whether funds for one-time window painting might be better spent on reusable banners or pole banners that could be repurposed for other events. One council member indicated earlier in the discussion that they would abstain; the motion was moved, seconded and the chair declared the resolution passed.
