Bridgewater issues RFP for assessment of three historic cemeteries

Bridgewater’s Community Preservation Committee reported that a revised request for proposals (RFP) had been issued for a cemetery assessment covering three cemeteries: the Summer Street cemetery, Trinity Cemetery on Main Street and Jennings Hill on High Street.
Staff said the downsized RFP focuses on documenting the number of broken headstones, stones that can be reset, cleaning needs and estimated professional-preservation costs. The vendor selected will be asked to produce a table of estimated conservation tasks and associated prices so the committee can evaluate further funding requests.
During public comment, resident Janet Hansen asked that any cleaning and conservation preserve the historic appearance of stones — “not bleached white” — and staff said work must follow national guidelines for cemetery preservation. The committee agreed the assessment’s results should include cost estimates for professional contractors and a plan for public access to scanned photographs and records when feasible.
