Crocker processing site formally designated the Chesterton Compost Site

A council member reported that the facility historically known as Crocker has been renamed the Chesterton Compost Site after the town applied to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and received state permission. "So we applied the IDEM for that designation so we can still get grants from Bridal, and they granted permission for the name to be changed to Chesterton Compost Site," the council member said.
He explained the site functions as a processing and deposit operation behind the street department where residents can get mulch and participate in the recycling program, and that the town has equipment (a screener and a leaf turner) to process material. The town emphasized that the processed material moves quickly and that allowing unrestricted public access to unprocessed piles creates safety concerns, so renaming and clarifying the site's status will reduce people "rooting through the material" and improve staff safety.
The council indicated the name change will help with grant eligibility and operational clarity; staff will update signage and public information to reflect the Chesterton Compost Site designation.
