Commissioners and county administrator flag behavioral health gaps, veterans telehealth barriers

Matt, the county administrator, described work he is pursuing outside his county role to address veterans’ access to telemental-health services when veterans travel across state lines. He said federal preemption allows community care access under certain VA rules but that the VA has not uniformly preempted state licensure barriers for community-care contractors. "If a veteran has to wait for 20 or more days for services from the VA, they're eligible to go to the community for care," Matt said, and he described pending petitions and letters to federal leadership seeking clearer preemption for veterans’ telecare.
Commissioners asked for follow-up at future meetings; the county administrator said he and others are pursuing legislative and VA-rulemaking avenues and that local officials will revisit the topic as proposals or rule changes develop.
