Chamber seeks county support for Sweet Corn Festival; board agrees to severe-weather plan and moves inflatables to street

Erin Miller of the Adel Chamber asked the board July 7 for permission to use parts of the courthouse lawn for the Aug. 8 Sweet Corn Festival and outlined plans to work with Dallas County Emergency Management on severe-weather shelter-in-place locations.
Board members and staff discussed liability, monitoring and access if the courthouse building were to be used for sheltering during severe weather and differentiated that from running a cooling center all day (which would require staffing and additional logistics). Erin Miller said vendors and festival attendees would be directed to identified shelter locations via a QR code and that the chamber is coordinating with EMA, the library and local schools.
After discussion the board indicated no objection to providing severe-weather sheltering support in coordination with EMA and suggested the chamber move inflatables off the new lawn to the closed street to avoid potential damage to recently sodded areas; the board asked staff to work further on cooling-center logistics and liability and to report back next week.
