City planners present draft Northwest Park master plan; option C favored

City planning staff and their consultant presented a draft preferred concept for the Northwest Park master plan, saying option C — a smaller-footprint design with nature play, bouldering and an interpretive pathway — rose to the top after public feedback; staff will present cost estimates to city council.
Matthew Martin of the city planning division opened the meeting and said staff wanted feedback on a draft preferred design before taking it to council. "I'm just here to provide you an update and get some additional feedback from you as the projects progress," he said.
Consultant John Champlin reviewed three conceptual alternatives and said option C "rose to the top" because it fit the site better and kept the pavilion and parking footprint smaller. He listed favored elements carried into the draft preferred concept: a nature-scape playground, a '3 Sisters' bouldering zone with varying difficulty, an interpretive pathway through the tree canopy, and limited irrigated lawn space. Champlin also noted the plan reflects public and council input gathered since September and the October community forum.
Champlin described vehicular circulation changes and three primary pedestrian entrances. He said staff will use the draft to develop a cost estimate and present that analysis to city council in January for further direction. The final master-plan report will include the preferred alternative and, if necessary, scaled-back options for council consideration.
