Local advocates warn parents about online predators; county prosecutors cited trafficking cases

April Leiferman, speaking for the Polly Klaas Foundation outreach in Lake County, told the council that predators increasingly target youth through online platforms and games such as Roblox, Fortnite and Snapchat and described how predators groom young people by studying their social media and encouraging them to delete evidence.
Leiferman said the foundation trains high school students to educate younger children and reported a successful pilot at Kelseyville High School with 125 attendees; Supervisor Brad Rasmussen added that between 2022 and 2025, 34 human-trafficking cases were forwarded to the District Attorney for prosecution. Leiferman said the education program will expand into elementary schools and that Rotary Clubs will continue fundraising and grant requests to support the outreach.
