Committee members were told the audit identified a material weakness related to insurance proceeds and revenue recognition. Gary Bennett (district CFO) said the district received $500,000 from its insurance company but only spent about $340,000 of related expenses in that fiscal year, and the timing led staff to defer revenue instead of recognizing it in the prior year.
"It was $500,000," Gary Bennett said when describing the size of the transaction. He and the auditor explained that the misclassification made the issue material because of the amount involved, not because funds were misspent. The district corrected the entries during the audit after the auditor raised the issue, and staff described that the corrections removed the classification error.
The committee discussed the need for clearer internal controls and accounting expertise to ensure complex or irregular transactions are classified correctly in future audits. Staff said recruiting experienced accountants and hiring a controller are among the steps to reduce similar errors.
