Sherwood board debates communication protocols after surprise parent email

Board members spent a lengthy portion of the work session discussing how the district sends information to the board and to families. The facilitator reviewed existing channels — weekly board updates, one‑way text alerts, interim updates, 'fireside chats', and phone calls — and asked whether the mix meets board needs.

Several members said the weekly updates and fireside chats have been useful, but described a learning curve after one member stopped receiving frequent direct briefings. The Chair observed that a short text ahead of an outgoing email would help avoid surprises; the Chair said, "I feel like that maybe is a good text heads up, just knowing that it is coming." Superintendent Aaron noted operational realities during emergencies, adding that sometimes "we're getting it through our office at about the same time as that school is handling that emergency," which can limit staff's ability to provide prior notice.
