EPA SBMM cleanup: first residential phase slated for August; project will move large volumes of soil

Carter Jessop reported that the EPA is preparing outreach and technical materials for the SBMM Cleanup and that the first phase will be residential cleanup starting in August. He said the project needs about 250,000 cubic yards of clean soil, will move roughly 1 million cubic yards of dirt overall, and will remove approximately 3,000 trees as part of excavation and remediation work. Design and technical data are being developed and the project will include traffic, dust and noise management and cultural resources protections.
ERTH members were informed that more detailed outreach and slides will be presented at the May 6 ERTH meeting; the update emphasized the scale of the remediation and the need for continued community engagement around impacts and protections.
