Transportation team honored; director highlights driver training, new buses and strong fleet maintenance

The board recognized Sherwood’s transportation team and heard a presentation on the district’s bus rodeo and driver training program. Jim Rose introduced the team and invited Casey Jevons, the district’s director of transportation, to describe the training and recent fleet developments.
Jevons said the rodeo and related safety exercises focus on practical driving skills and written tests designed to sharpen drivers’ ability to handle tight maneuvers and routine challenges. "There are 3 written tests they take. There are 11 driving skills that involve everything from backing up to ... railroad tracks," Jevons said, describing the regimen. He acknowledged the district did not bring home a trophy this year but said the exercises are about readiness and training.
Jevons also noted two new buses were delivered in the previous week; one required a minor dealer fix and one is available for viewing. He credited mechanics Jaber Davenport and Alan Lemke with keeping the fleet in strong condition and reported the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) inspection last May returned very good scores for the district fleet. Jevons closed by inviting board members to visit the bus lot and inspect the equipment after the meeting.
Board members thanked the transportation team for keeping students safe and agreed to tour the new bus after the meeting.
