Ethan Douglas, the school’s ASP president and student representative to the board, opened his report by saying the high school’s opening went smoothly: "On Wednesday, 1st day of school, we started off with all 1,700 students in school," he told the board.
Douglas outlined four categories—academics, arts, activities, athletics—saying freshmen had a Link Crew orientation and the district held a club fair showcasing more than 40 clubs. He said the high school is taking "a bigger stance on phones in the classroom," reporting that more students were putting phones away so they could focus on learning.
On arts and activities, Douglas said theater callbacks concluded and the high school will stage a production of The Lightning Thief; marching band is preparing for competitions beginning in October. He provided homecoming logistics: hall decorating is set for the 28th, the parade will follow the traditional route beginning at the charter school and ending near the middle school, and homecoming is scheduled for the 5th with class competitions including powder puff and a lip-sync-style video element to reduce stage anxiety.
Douglas closed his remarks by inviting attendees to join a short performance by the high school drumline on the front lawn.
