Sherwood board welcomes new superintendent; levy to bring roughly $6 million this year, superintendent says

The Sherwood School District board welcomed new superintendent Doctor Downs and heard his first superintendent report, in which he thanked staff for summer preparations and described the impact of a recently passed local levy.
"The levy itself is gonna bring approximately $6,000,000 into our budget for this year," Doctor Downs said, adding that the levy’s passage will retain about 57 staff positions. He praised district office and school staff for their work preparing for the return of students and families.
Downs described early enrollment trends, saying the district saw a large senior class exit and a smaller kindergarten cohort this year while noting growth in other grades. He also told the board the district is tracking local development: "We have nearly 2,200 homes in Sherwood that over the next 10 to 15 years are supposed to be going in," a projection he said the district will monitor as it plans for capacity and services.
The superintendent said the district has begun "learning walks" with district office staff to be present in schools and support classroom instruction and staff, and he emphasized staff and family engagement as priorities in the new year. He closed by thanking the community for the levy support and the board for its partnership.
