FWCS board accepts $1.21 million Perkins V grant for career and technical programs

The Fort Wayne Community Schools Board of Trustees voted to accept a Perkins V basic grant totaling $1,210,795 for the 2026–27 school year, with the same amount expected for 2027–28, a district official said.
Sandra Adams, principal at the Career Academy, explained that Perkins V is a federal program distributed through states and intended to fund shared career and technical education facilities and labs. "Perkins is federal, and then it goes to the states, and the states determine how their money is allocated out," she said. The district plans to use the funding to support career and technical teachers and lab operations at AMPLAB, the Career Academy and other shared facilities in Allen County.
Board discussion clarified that a portion of the grant is distributed to shared county facilities (Adams said about 30% is shared out), with a larger share staying at the Career Academy to cover lab costs. Trustees approved the recommendation by voice vote with no opposition.
