The Judicial Council approved an updated two‑year tactical plan for technology that sustains existing initiatives and adds a dedicated emerging‑technology workstream to examine artificial intelligence and other tools.
ITAC Chair Judge Sheila Hansen and workstream members said the plan refines—rather than overhauls—the branch’s technology priorities, which include the digital core, public services and partner integrations, data and security, and infrastructure. Judge Hansen noted the plan is ‘‘aligned with the strategic plan for technology’’ and focuses on branch‑wide initiatives that expand online services and improve access to justice.
Presenters highlighted three initiatives: electronic evidence management (to streamline evidence handling and update rules of court), a branch‑wide information security program (responding to increasing cyber threats), and a new emerging‑technology initiative to evaluate tools including AI. "Following the chief’s lead in establishing an artificial intelligence task force, the intent here is to improve court efficiencies and enhance services for the public," a presenter said.
Council members discussed funding tradeoffs—some members urged prioritizing recruitment and retention while others emphasized cybersecurity needs. After discussion, members moved and approved the tactical plan; the plan will guide branch technology initiatives and the formation of the emerging‑technology workstream.
