A United Nations presenter told the council that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported repeated complete losses of off-site power at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, calling the pattern alarming for the safe operation of Europe’s largest nuclear plant.
The presenter said the IAEA recorded the plant’s 22nd complete loss of off-site power and that 10 such incidents occurred within the past three months, underscoring the deteriorating reliability of the electrical grid needed for safe operations. The presenter also cited drone attacks near towns where plant staff live and expressed concern for staff safety under difficult operating conditions.
"Any military actions endangering the safety and security of nuclear plants are unconscionable and irresponsible," the presenter said, urging maximum restraint to avoid any risk of a nuclear accident. The presenter called on all parties to refrain from actions that could imperil nuclear safety and highlighted the need for continued IAEA monitoring and assistance.
