Independence High to receive $16,000 New Mexico Grads grant; board approves acceptance

The board voted to accept a New Mexico Grads grant for the 2026–27 school year that will provide Independence High School $16,000 to support expectant and parenting students. Jessica Sanchez, associate superintendent over secondary education, introduced the item and turned the presentation to Principal Andrea Yarbrough.
"I'm here on behalf of Independence High School to request your approval of a grant that will provide opportunities and support for our students totaling $16,000," Principal Andrea Yarbrough said. The presentation explained the grant covers salary and benefits for a grads teacher/case manager, mentoring services, instructional supplies, travel and other identified needs to help student‑parents complete high school. Board members confirmed the award is administered through Socorro Consolidated Schools as fiscal agent and approved acceptance of the funds.
Board members praised the program’s outcomes and expected the grant to support the district’s four-year graduation cohort. The motion to accept the award passed by voice vote.
