County approves GDOT purchase of 2.52 acres at Veterans Park for SR‑20 widening, $752,600

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners authorized a right‑of‑way sale to the Georgia Department of Transportation on May 20, approving an agreement to convey 2.52 acres at Veterans Park for the State Route 20 widening project for $752,600. County staff presented a breakdown: $250,000 per acre (2.52 acres = $630,250) plus $58,507 for fence replacement and $63,785 for sign/lighting relocation.
Chair Harry Johnson urged cooperation with GDOT given the county’s need for the agency’s assistance on other major projects, saying it was preferable to “play nice” rather than hold out for additional money. The board voted unanimously to accept the offer and authorized the county manager to execute the purchase agreement.
The county noted the funds will be used to cover cost‑to‑cure items and that GDOT is responsible for construction of the widened roadway. The agreement documents and final transfers will be administered by the county manager’s office.
