Board approves variance for garage addition to help disabled veteran at 532 Victoria Road

The Cherokee County Board of Zoning Appeals voted 3–1 to approve a variance to reduce the side setback at 532 Victoria Road from 15 feet to 5 feet so owner Kurt Marola (speaker 10) can add a two‑car garage and pantry at the main level. Marola, who described himself as a disabled veteran, said the proposed addition will eliminate a 22‑step route between his basement garage and main living spaces and will allow him to age in place more safely.
Builder Gary McCormick (speaker 16) told the board the addition is drawn to scale (about a typical 24 ft by 28 ft garage) and that reducing the setback allows the owners to maintain the primary living level without long ramps or an elevator. Board members who supported the variance cited practical difficulties related to topography and the owner’s mobility; one member opposed. The motion to approve passed 3–1.
