Justice Arthur Gilbert accepted a Distinguished Service Award recognizing a judicial career that spans more than five decades. Presenters called Gilbert a mentor to generations of judges, noted his skill in clear judicial writing (referred to in the ceremony as a distinctive “Gilbert opinion”), and cited his long record of outreach, teaching and published columns that the presenters said have benefitted the bench and bar.
Gilbert reflected on a career that began with municipal court appointment in 1975 and includes service on the Court of Appeal and longstanding public engagement through writing and teaching. He told the audience he was deeply honored and said the role of a judge is to make reasoned decisions and to explain them plainly. “It's been a glorious ride,” Gilbert said in his closing remarks. Colleagues closed the ceremony with congratulations and invited attendees to a reception in the Milton Marks lobby.
