Judge Sam Jesner honored for expanding access to courts

Judge Sam Jesner accepted the Aranda Access to Justice Award in remarks that credited colleagues and court staff for collaborative reforms aimed at expanding meaningful access to the courts. Presenters highlighted Jesner’s work as presiding judge (2023–24) and her leadership on committees that updated plain‑language forms and streamlined civil case processing.

Jesner said the honor reflected a team effort and cited specific projects that her court advanced, including a pathway pilot to streamline unlimited civil case processing, a mediation volunteer program for low‑income litigants, expanded remote access and a program to provide free transit for jurors. “This award is truly a reflection of the work of many people, certainly not just me,” Jesner said, accepting the honor on behalf of court staff and collaborators. The award citation also noted Jesner’s role as executive sponsor of a video‑remote interpreting initiative and her work to design hybrid courtrooms for improved public access.

The presentation included a University partnership that allowed academic researchers to advise the court on operational changes and a video tribute describing efforts to make forms and processes more understandable for self‑represented litigants. Jesner emphasized plain‑language forms, in‑house training programs for court reporters and interpreters, and electronic document upload functions as practical steps courts are using to reduce barriers to participation in court proceedings. The ceremony closed with congratulations and an invitation to a reception.
