Cherokee County approves $974,100 purchase of former Free Home Elementary for parks, library and community uses

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of the former Free Home Elementary School site for $974,100 on May 6, authorizing the county manager to complete the transaction. County staff said the 6.428-acre parcel will be used to expand athletic fields, preserve the historic Free Home Gymnasium and potentially host a satellite library location and other county services.
"Oh, yes, it will be retained," Commissioner West said when asked whether the building itself would be preserved and refurbished; commissioners discussed plans to reuse the gym and to explore community uses such as senior programs, nonprofit office space or a satellite tax office. Funding for the purchase will come in part from prior county property sales; staff said the county completed due diligence and had agreed terms with the Cherokee County School System.
The motion to approve the real estate sale and authorize closing was seconded and passed unanimously. County staff will proceed with closing steps and begin planning for repurposing the building and site.
