Friends of Lawrence Area Trails says grants cover most mural costs; final fundraising under way

Representatives of Friends of Lawrence Area Trails told the commission that the mural project received a Sunflower Foundation grant and a matching city cultural arts grant, with smaller community donations filling a remaining gap.
Chris Tilden, who identified himself as chair of Friends of Lawrence Area Trails, said, "They provided a grant as did the city through the cultural arts grant program. We are still doing a little bit of additional fundraising to raise the additional funds needed..." Proponents said they are close to securing all needed funding and hope to start work before the end of the summer, subject to permits and equipment availability.
Commissioners asked about scaffolding, lifts and safety permits; proponents acknowledged those needs and said they are part of the remaining preparations. The commissions recommendation will move the project to the City Commission for final approval, after which proponents expect to proceed with contracting and scheduling.
