The Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission voted unanimously on July 8 to recommend the 'Estama Aki / We Are Here' mural by artist Dave Lowenstein for the west-facing wall of the Free State Brewing Company bottling facility at 1927 Moody Road.
Chair Daniel B. Smith introduced the proposal and praised the sketch, saying, "Sketch is beautiful. I'm looking forward to seeing it be beautiful on the building." Commissioners moved and seconded the recommendation; Tim moved the motion and Alicia seconded. Chair Smith said he will place the recommendation on the City Commission agenda for July 21.
Artist Dave Lowenstein, the project lead, described the murals imagery as layered references to the trail and to items people encounter there. Commissioners noted the sites visibility from nearby 19th Street and called the wall an appropriate place for a public artwork that engages trail users.
The commissions recommendation will go to the City Commission for final approval; project proponents said they expect to begin work once remaining funds and permits are secured.
