Accessibility commission highlights work with parks, Pride and hands out inclusion awards

The Ferndale Accessibility and Inclusion Advisory Commission presented its annual report to city council and recognized local businesses and organizations for steps they’ve taken to improve accessibility and inclusion.
Chair Rachel Sellers described the commission’s role advising city departments and community partners on accessibility measures, citing work on Lennon Park grant advice, accessible wayfinding and improvements at Ferndale Pride, where the commission runs a sensory and quiet space. "Our mission is to make Ferndale a place of choice to work, live, and visit for people with disabilities and remove barriers to access within our community," Sellers said.
The commission presented three Accessibility & Inclusion Awards to Christian Brothers LLC (senior home repair and safety improvements), Station 515 (adaptive personal training and appointment flexibility) and the Ferndale Area District Library (lighting, signage, large‑print collections and accessibility programming). The commission also announced Disability Pride Month events and called for applicants to fill two open commission seats.
Next steps: the commission will continue advising city projects, pursue public education about accessibility for adaptive reuse properties and host Disability Pride Month activities and an ice‑cream social later this week.
