Isleton’s interim city manager told the council on Jan. 7 that the city is facing a severe cash shortfall and must implement temporary service reductions to stay solvent.
“In effect, we are $800,000 in the hole,” the manager said during the meeting as part of a broader presentation on staff reductions, furloughs and operational changes. The manager outlined immediate cuts: three previously high‑paid staff positions left in the past year; remaining 40‑hour employees have been cut to 32 hours; weekend public restrooms are closed and CalCard purchasing has been suspended pending resolution of account issues. He said the city will limit public counter hours to “Wednesdays from 8 to 5” while staff and consultants work to restore accounts and finalize financial controls.
Council and legal counsel discussed alternatives including targeted contracting with county departments to cover specific services (the manager estimated county contracts could save about $120,000 annually for certain departments) and hiring temporary contractors on a task‑order basis for work that would increase the city’s odds of recovery. The CPA and council urged careful prioritization so that public‑safety and essential infrastructure responsibilities (fire, public works, sewer) are not compromised by the cuts.
Council did not finalize a permanent staffing plan at the meeting; instead it directed the ad hoc finance committee and staff to prepare prioritized recommendations and reporting for the next meeting.
