Heather Simons, a resident of School Street, addressed the Vergennes City Council during the visitors portion of the March 27 meeting to outline a Cemetery Renewal Project for the town's old burial ground. She asked the council to permit formation of a volunteer cemetery committee to help maintain the site and described a planned working day with the Vermont Old Cemeteries Association (VOCA) on May 18 to make repairs and reset gravestones.
Simons said she has ordered a replacement gravestone for a Civil War veteran whose original marker is now rubble and requested that 11 trees that are lifting graves be removed to prevent further damage. She invited the public to a presentation at the Bixby on Saturday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to noon, with a cleanup to follow from 12:30–2:30 p.m., and asked the council to permit the committee to proceed with the project and its maintenance activities.
The council did not take a formal vote on the committee request during the March 27 meeting; the item was presented as a visitors' comment and entered into the record for future council consideration. The presentation and the May 18 cleanup were described as volunteer-led work, including VOCA participation.
