At the public‑comment portion of Monday’s meeting, residents who live near the fireworks display asked the council to change how the town stages the Fourth of July event because of safety and environmental concerns. Laura Chase, who lives one block from Weaverville Primary on Brown Street, said debris landed on roofs and in yards and described a neighbor’s roof damage and a nearby yard fire.
"I'm once appreciated the fireworks in Weaverville, but I do not anymore," Chase said. She told the council the fallout includes "concrete looking stuff" and expressed concern about pets, young children and the potential liability to the town. Caroline Colburn, a Park Street resident, urged the council to consider alternatives such as a drone show or moving the fireworks to a less densely populated site.
