Town staff reported to the Select Board that the actual municipal tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year will be lower than earlier projections: the overall rate came in at 8.1% rather than the 8.24% projected during budget discussions. The board approved the rates as presented: general fund 1.0437, highway fund 0.5890, and fire fund 0.1085.
Board members asked whether any reductions stemmed from cutting previously approved expenditures; staff said the lower rate reflected actual grand list growth and not cuts to the approved budget. Nancy White raised highway-fund concerns related to Old Bennington services; staff clarified that any contract to plow other villages would be separately approved and paid by those municipalities and would not affect Bennington’s tax rate. The motion to set rates passed with one dissenting vote.
