Indio to receive 500 shade trees under IID/CVAG CalFire/IRA grant to combat heat islands

City staff told commissioners that CVAG and IID secured a roughly $2.9 million Cal Fire/Inflation Reduction Act grant intended for shade‑tree planting across Southern California deserts, and Indio will receive 500 trees. Staff said 250 of the trees will be placed in public spaces (parks, streets) and 250 in private locations to reduce extreme heat and energy use and to improve air quality.
Staff said the trees will include native and drought‑tolerant species, will be delivered as 15‑gallon stock and will be planted over a three‑year period with many trees expected to be in the ground by the end of 2027. The grant administrator will coordinate outreach to identify private participants; the city will collaborate on public‑space siting and post‑planting maintenance.
