Council approves three-year MOU to reinstate school resource officers

Chief Lance Arnold described a three-year memorandum of understanding with Independent School District No. 73 that would reintroduce school resource officers (SROs) to Broken Arrow schools and clearly define duties for the police department, the city and the school district. He said the agreement starts with a small number of officers and allows for adding positions over the next two years.
"This marks a potential return for school resource officers to Broken Arrow public schools," Chief Lance Arnold said. He told council the MOU delineates responsibilities and includes training plans; staff noted several officers already have past SRO experience and others will attend required SRO certification training this summer.
Council members discussed training and deliverables in the agreement and then approved the MOU by motion. A council member moved approval and another seconded; the roll call proceeded and the motion passed (roll call recorded in the meeting minutes). The ordinance/memorandum will be implemented by police and school district staff under the terms outlined in the MOU.
