Nichols told the committee the Attorney General’s office suggested three narrow technical changes—tightening language and adding a clarifying definition—that strengthen the bill’s constitutional footing.
"This bill modernizes 'Son of Sam' law to prevent criminals from profiting from notoriety while protecting free speech and ensuring victims have a fair opportunity to recover damages as well as avoiding constitutional challenges," Nichols said. She asked the committee to send SB 12‑32 to the 14th order (amending order) so staff can incorporate the AG’s edits. The committee voted to send the bill to the amending order for possible amendment.
