Judiciary committee advances bill to remove obsolete court-rule reference

The Senate Judiciary & Rules Committee voted to send RS33146 to print. The bill, introduced by the Administrative Office of the Courts, would strike an obsolete reference to a non‑existent Rule 16(j) from a mediation-related statute.
Jason Spellman, legal counsel at the Administrative Office of the Courts, told the Senate Judiciary & Rules Committee that RS33146 is a technical fix to remove an inaccurate reference in statute. "Rule 16 j no longer exists and so the reference to that in the statute is not accurate," Spellman said, asking that the measure be printed for further consideration.
The bill targets a citation in the mediation statute (transcript reference to section 9807) that limits the information mediators may provide to courts. Spellman said the change would align the statutory language with current court rules and asked the committee to print the RS. A motion to send RS33146 to print was made, seconded and carried by voice vote. The committee did not debate the substance further and the RS will proceed to print.
