Oversight committee selects four OPE studies, including 9‑1‑1 and prison growth

The Joint Legislative Oversight Committee voted to send four study requests to the Office of Performance Evaluations (OPE) after a secret ranking of proposals.
"These are the the next Christmas presents to OPE," the chair said after the motion passed, framing the assignments as the committee's annual list of priorities. The projects approved were: boards of community guardians; factors driving growth in the prison population; impacts of growth on agriculture and infrastructure; and oversight of sexual assault in women's correctional facilities. Representative Burch moved to accept the four projects; Representative Redmond seconded and the motion passed by voice vote.
OPE Director Ryan Langrell told members the office can take on the four projects the committee prioritized and that staff will update the committee during the interim about capacity and scheduling. Casey Petty of OPE reported the ballot tally showed two projects with majority support and several others with dispersed backing, prompting the committee to approve the four highest‑ranked topics.
Next steps include OPE scheduling scopes and providing the committee with timelines and resource estimates. The committee asked OPE to revisit the list if work on any item proves smaller than expected so an additional small project could be assigned.
