Solid waste staff: in‑vessel compost and compartmentalized roll‑off pilot coming in FY26

Victoria Hoffman told the advisory board the department has procured an in‑vessel compost unit and scheduled a kickoff meeting with the vendor; the procurement includes installation, training and two years of support. “We have since procured that, and we have our kickoff meeting with that company, in the next couple coming weeks,” Hoffman said.

Hoffman also outlined a compartmentalized 40‑yard roll‑off container pilot for more rural convenience centers intended to accept separated streams (plastic, cans, paper) and increase recycling access outside the four main centers. She said compost storage sheds purchased with South Carolina state grant money are being installed, with a unit already placed at Shanklin convenience center to accept food waste and provide signage for accepted materials.

Staff described outreach plans, mascot and cultural review work with Gullah Geechee leader Queen Quet, and a multi‑week timeline for receiving and installing the in‑vessel equipment. Hoffman said these pilots and equipment purchases are contingent on FY26 budget approvals and vendor schedules.
