Planners weigh aquifer overlay, well dependence and limits on commercial extraction

Speakers pressed staff to provide clearer mapping of the town’s aquifer overlay and asked whether the plan can quantify how many residents rely on springs and shallow wells. One participant said that, in a state context, about 40% of residents might rely on private wells and recommended the plan include a more precise local estimate rather than saying only that “many residents” depend on springs and shallow wells.
The group also discussed language discouraging commercial water extraction in town to prevent depletion of private wells. Planner (S3) pointed to the existing plan language that discourages commercial extraction and suggested adding a clarifying parenthetical linking the aquifer overlay district to the map’s source-protection area. Several attendees said stronger policy language could help towns defend against proposals for commercial bottling or large extraction projects.
