Planning commission backs language to support reuse of vacant academy for housing

Commissioners recommended the town plan explicitly support redevelopment of the vacant academy building (referred to during discussion as the academy site) for housing, including senior housing options. Chair recounted the building’s decades‑long status as a local problem and urged the plan to 'unite around the transition of that vacant building into something that will benefit housing in Bakersfield.'

The presenter agreed it is appropriate to keep a redevelopment vision in the plan and suggested narrowing prospective uses to those most likely to receive funding and community support. Commissioners also discussed the linkage between senior housing and broader housing availability—concentrating seniors in appropriate housing could open family homes for younger residents. The commission asked staff to include redevelopment support language in the housing chapter and to note potential funding programs and implementation steps where known.
