Council approves free downtown holiday parking pilot, with ribbons on meters and donation option

Tracy Lewis, executive director of the Barre Partnership, asked council to add a holiday free-parking pilot to the consent agenda: mark downtown meters with red ribbons and offer two-hour free parking from Friday, Nov. 28 through Wednesday, Dec. 31, with any coins inserted during that period set aside for donation to local organizations. “We are requesting for free parking from Friday, November 28 through Wednesday, December 31,” Lewis told the council.
Councilors discussed practical matters including how the program would be publicized, whether people could still pay via the parking app (yes), enforcement of the two-hour limit, and how collected funds would be handled (through the clerk/treasurer). A councilor noted the program raised about $1,200 last year; staff said they would publicize the program via the city’s social channels and the Barre Partnership would promote it as well. The consent agenda, including the parking pilot, was approved by voice vote.
