Sponsor asks committee to repeal obsolete anti-piracy statutes from Title 18

Representative John Schertz (District 9) explained that RS33111 stems from a review of Title 18 that identified outdated or unused statutes. "This bill repeals chapter 69, 76 and 77 of title 18 which is the Idaho Anti Camcorder Piracy Act, the Tape Piracy Act, and the Motion Picture Fair Bidding Act," he told the committee, adding that the offenses appear never to have been prosecuted and often involve interstate conduct now covered by federal law.
Schertz said the provisions are largely irrelevant in a modern, digital distribution environment and asked the committee to introduce the RS. A motion to introduce RS33111 passed by voice vote. No public testimony was offered during the introduction.
